工房長を描くYannさん。迷いのない筆の運びにより、おおよそ2時間ほどで絵が完成。

　《"きょう"というかけがえのない日に、"え"と"おと"を描く》をコンセプトに活動されている「きょう と え と おと」。それを主宰されている油彩作家のYann Le Gal（ヤン・ル・ガル）さんによる「京都人ポートレイト　１００」のプロジェクトに、便利堂も携わらせて頂くことになりました。油絵（アクリル）で描く100人の京都人の一人に、なんと工房長も描いていただけることになったのです！

Yann Le Galさんとの出会い

　5月のある日、初めてのお客さまより画集制作のご依頼を受けました。打合せでお会いすると、どこかでお見かけしたお顔なのです・・・すぐにピンときました。4月に弊社コロタイプ工房にてワークショップを開催した際、参加者と一緒に見学にいらっしゃった方だったのです。それがYann Le Galさんでした。ワークショップでコロタイプの良さを実感され、便利堂に再びご来社頂いたことに大変感動しました。同時にこの繋がりを大切にしたいと思ったことを覚えています。

　お話をお聞きすると、Yannさんは幼少の頃からアートを始められたとのこと。故郷のフランスでは歴代最年少の25歳でルノアールファウンデーション大賞を受賞され、数々の個展を開催。来日されてからもライブペインティングを行い、アートと深く関わりのある生活を送られていたことを知りました。表現方法に関してはとことんこだわりを持つYannさん。そのような方がワークショップで実際に見て、感じて便利堂を選んでくださったこと、大変光栄に思います。


100m屏風！？

　「京都人ポートレイト　１００」とは、様々な職業、趣味、生き様を持つ100人の個性豊かな”人”を描くプロジェクトです。会場では、約畳一枚分の大きな木の板に等身大に描かれた総勢100名のポートレイトが、一双の屏風状に並びます。1枚が縦180cm×横90cmの大きさの作品ですから、２隻合計の全長はおおよそ100m屏風！想像しただけですごい迫力です。

　去年の6月頃から1年がかりで描かれた100人の"京都人"。ところで京都人って？と気になる方もいらっしゃることでしょう。対象となった方は、所謂京都の職人さんはもちろん、ご近所で見かける方、アーティスト、行きつけのお店の店員さんなど、どこかで見たことがあるような京都在住の老若男女の方が対象となっており、同じ"木の板"という素材の上に描かれることで、平等な個人が表現されています。


弊社コロタイプ工房長の山本が、この"京都人"の1人としてモデルを務めさせていただきました！　京都人99人目。100人目はYannさんご自身です。

　「1つ1つの肖像画は作品の一部である」とYannさんは語られます。コレクションを構成する全体に溶け込んだ1人1人が、各々に京都人としての自己を定義し、作品に価値を与えています。地域や社会で繋がっている個性豊かな"ひと"に焦点が当てられるとこで、見るものは引きつけられ、そして考えさせられます。このようなテーマがあるということを頭の片隅に、大迫力の展示会をお楽しみ下さいませ。木の風合が活かされ、気持ちのいいタッチで描かれた作品は必見です。来週10日（水）から。

Hariban Award started this year as a new project of collotype atelier. Thank you for a lot of quality submissions beyond our expectation. Total applicants were 131 from all over Asia, Europe and the United States. Jurors were amazed at the quality of the wide variety of works.

Right after the submission period of July 30, the first audit was started. 51applicants were selected from 131 applicants and passed the first audit ⇒a list of 51 who passed here. Then, the second audit began. The jurors narrowed down the applicants to 26 at first. They, however, didn’t reach the final results from there because votes by jurors divided. It was hard to select the Grand-prize because those were all wonderful portfolios. Therefore, decided to narrow down the 26 to 10. ⇒finalists here

As a result of the stricter audit, eventually the grand prize was decided to go to Awoiska. Each juror also selected one artist whom he /she would like to introduce. That was how there jury’s special award recipients were selected.

Besides above prizes, “We want to collotype these” prize is being created. Artisans of our atelier are selecting from all the 131 applicants. Please look forward to the result.

Awoiska, the winner of Hariban Award, will come to Kyoto, probably at the beginning of October and stay for two weeks to create collotype prints with artisans. We will report her visits later. Collotype printings she will make with artisans during her stay will be exhibited at the Kyotographie as the official program next year.

We also plan to publish an official catalogue at the time of Kyotographie. Works of the Grand-prize winner and Jury’s special award recipients will appear in the catalogue. Works of finalists and “We want to collotype these by artisans” prize recipient will be introduced in the catalogue too.

Grand- Prize

Awoiska van der Molen was born 1972 in Groningen, the Netherlands.
Between 1994 and 2001, she studied architecture and photography at the Dutch Academy of fine Arts Minerva in Groningen
In 2000, she participated in the photography department of the City University of New York.
In 2003, she graduated at the Master Photography studies at the St. Joost Academy Breda (NL).
Van der Molen is known for her monochrome landscapes. She stands out as someone who remains rooted in the riches of analogue photography and printing. She plays out these roots in an extreme manner by creating monumental pieces that combine intentionality in choice of subject and photographic craftsmanship. She prints all the barytas herself in the darkroom.
In 2011 she was the finalist at the Hyères Photography Festival in France and
in the same year she has won the Alt. + 1000 prize at the Festival de la Photography de la Montagne,.
Currently based in Amsterdamand Umbria, Italy.
Awoiska van der Molen is represented by Kristof de Clercq Gallery, Ghent (BE) and Purdy Hicks Gallery, London (UK).

“I am very excited and gratefull that I have been invited to meet Kyoto’s master artisan printers in the Benrido Collotype atelier and produce collotype prints with them. This is an amazing opportunity and I’m beyond words that I will have the chance to collaborate with the Benrido atelier on printing my photo works. Learning from the rich experience of the craftsmen on how to interpret images and how to translate these with the complex process of collotype printing will be an unforgettable experience. I have no doubt that this collaboration will have a significant influence on my work as a photo based artist. I can’t wait to meet the Benrido-team to start working together!

Born in the east end of London, England, Antony Cairns has been taking photographs since the age of 15. A constant theme in his images has been the city of his birth. He has chosen his subject and is on a path to document his city, the place he calls home, a metropolis that is certainly the centre of his universe. A traditionally trained photographer who learnt his trade at the London College of Printing towards the end of the 1990s, his photographic practice has remained rooted in chemical-based techniques. Shooting almost exclusively on black & white film, he prints all his own work, often experimenting with forgotten or discarded methods, and frequently becoming engrossed with the process, its imperfections and oddities.

Marco van Duyvendijk was born in the Netherlands. After a degree in psychology, Marco goes to Romania to spend a year devoting himself to photography. In the years that follow, Van Duyvendijks work will not take him just to Romania, but also to Mongolia, China, South Korea and many other countries. He sees art, and therefore his own photography, as a means of communication between East and West and this field of mutual influence is where he feels at home.
Marco van Duyvendijk is a slow photographer, preferring to work on a series for months and sometimes years. He does not confine himself to any single genre, alternating travel and documentary photography with portraits.

“In 2012 I was in Kyoto and visited the Benrido Collotype laboratory. I was fascinated by it, so when I read about the Hariban Award I had no choice but to participate. I am very happy and honored that my work received the Jury's Special Award. Of course I am also slightly jealous of my Dutch colleague Awoiska van der Molen that she won the Hariban Award, but I think her work is very beautiful and mysterious, so her first prize is very well-deserved. I am sure that her work will look beautifully in collotype.”

Tenmi Hanagi was born in Kanagawa, Japan 1972.
She graduated from Sanno College in 1993.
Her solo exhibitions are held constantly, mainly in Tokyo.

　コロタイプ工房の新たな取り組みとして今年から始めたHARIBAN AWARDですが、世界中から期待以上の多くの、そしてクォリティの高い作品を応募していただきました。本当にありがとうございました。応募総数は131名、欧米アジアから広くご応募いただき、非常に個性豊かな作品が一堂に会して、審査員の方々もそのレベルの高さに大いに目を瞠られました。

　締切の6月30日以後、すぐに第1次審査にとりかかり、131名のうち51名が第1次審査を通過されました。⇒通過された51名のリストはこちら　引き続き第2次審査が始まり、まず26名まで絞り込まれました。しかし、いずれ劣らぬ素晴らしい応募作ばかりでしたので、審査員の票も割れ、ここから一気に最優秀賞の決定にまで至らず、まず一旦10名にまで絞り込むこととなりました。⇒ファイナリストのリストはこちら

　このファイナリスト10名から、さらに厳正な審査がなされ、晴れてAwoiskaさんの最優秀賞が決定されました。また、ファイナリストのなかから、惜しくも最優秀賞は逃されましたが、ぜひ作品を紹介したいという作家を各審査員に1名選出していただき「審査員特別賞」3名が決定されました。

　これ以外に、全応募者131名から、「工房の職人が選ぶコロタイプで刷ってみたい作品」賞を設けたいと思います。これは現在工房の方で選出中ですので、追って結果を発表したいと思います。

　最優秀者のAwoiskaさんには、来日いただき京都で2週間職人と一緒にコロタイププリントを作り上げていただきます。10月上旬に来日いただく予定で進行しており、また作業の様子もお知らせしていきたいと思います。今回作り上げたコロタイププリントは、来年のKyotographieの公式プログラムとして展観されます。

　また、それに合わせてコロタイプで制作した公式カタログの刊行を予定しており、カタログには最優秀賞作品ならびに審査員特別賞作品を掲載予定です。そして、「工房の職人が選ぶコロタイプで刷ってみたい作品」賞作品とファイナリスト作品もご紹介するつもりです。

1972年オランダ・フローニンゲン生まれ。
1994年-2001年フローニンゲンのthe Dutch Academy of fine Arts Minervaにて建築と写真を学ぶ。
2000年NY市立大学写真学部に学ぶ。
2003年オランダSt. Joost Academy Bredaにて写真学の修士課程を修了。
アナログの風景写真で知られ、アナログ写真とアナログのプリント技術を大切にすべての印画工程を暗室にて自身で行っている。
2011年フランス・イエール写真フェスティバルファイナリスト。

現在はアムステルダムとイタリアを拠点に活動中。作品はアムステルダム、ゲント、ロンドン、マドリッドなど様々エキシビジョンで展示されている。

「京都で便利堂コロタイプ工房の熟練した職人さんとともにコロタイプができるということに大変胸が高鳴っており感謝の気持ちでいっぱいです。便利堂工房で職人さんたちと共に私の作品をプリントする機会を得たということは私にとって信じられないようなチャンスであり言葉がないほどです。複雑な技法であるコロタイプでどのように画を表現していくのかを職人さんたちの豊かな経験から学べることは忘れがたい経験となることでしょう。この経験が写真をベースにしたアーティストとしての私の作品に大きな影響を与えるだろうことは疑いようがありません。便利堂のみなさんと会い作業をする日が待ちきれません。

ロンドンイーストエンド生まれ。15歳頃より写真を撮り続けている。
彼のコンスタントなテーマは“都市に生まれたこと”。都市は彼の“ホーム”であり彼の世界の中心である。
1990年代の終わりにLONDON College of Printingで伝統的な写真技術を学ぶ。
撮影はほぼ白黒で行いすべて自身によるプリントを行っている。
すでに忘れ去られ、使われなくなった技法での印画実験をよく行っている。

オランダ生まれ。心理学で学位取得後、ルーマニアに渡り写真漬けの一年を送る。
その後はルーマニアだけでなくモンゴル、中国、韓国など様々な国で写真を撮り続けている。
彼は自身の写真を東洋と西洋のコミュニケーションととらえ、
東洋と西洋の相互作用が起こる場所、そのような場所を“ホーム”と感じている。
マルコはスローな写真家であり、1つのシリーズに数カ月、時に数年を費やすこともある。
1つのジャンルに縛られず、旅をし、ポートレートを交えたドキュメンタリー写真を撮り続けている。

「2012年私は京都を訪れ便利堂コロタイプ工房を見学し、魅了されました。ですのでHARIBAN AWARDについて読んだ時には参加することに全く迷いがありませんでした。私の作品が審査員特別賞を受賞したことは大変うれしいです。もちろん、私のオランダ人の写真仲間であるAwoiska van der Molenが最優秀賞を受賞したことに多少のジェラシーは感じますが、彼女の作品はとても美しくミステリアスなので最優秀賞受賞にふさわしいと思います。彼女の作品はコロタイプでプリントしたら絶対に美しいだろうと思います。」
